Stat Pack: Hat-tricks
Shane MurphyThere were just three hat-tricks scored in the League of Ireland Premier Division in 2024 and all of them involved Waterford – two for, one against.
First up was Patrick Hoban’s hat-trick in Derry’s 3-0 win at the Brandywell in March with all three goals coming in an eleven-minute spell either side of half time. In May, Maleace Asamoah scored three in Waterford’s 4-1 demolition of Dundalk at the RSC, topped off with a sublime chip from distance for his third.
Just two weeks later, Pádraig Amond scored the third and final hat-trick of the Premier Division season in the Blues’ remarkable 4-2 comeback win over Drogheda United. From two down early in the second half, Podge scored three times in just thirteen minutes to turn the game on its head live on national television.
Our previous ten hat-tricks prior to last year were as follows:
28/10/23 - Romeo Akachukwu (3-1 v Athlone Town)
Romeo’s big moment that kept promotion hopes alive in the play-off.
5/6/23 - Ronan Coughlan (6-0 at Kerry FC)
A four-goal haul for Ronan including a late penalty.
24/4/23 - Ronan Coughlan (4-1 at Treaty United)
Three – the first a penalty – to make it seven goals in four days in Coughlan’s record-breaking year.
21/4/23 - Ronan Coughlan (4-3 v Athlone Town)
Ronan scored all four in the first half of a game where Waterford were left hanging on at the end.
17/2/23 - Wassim Aouachria (3-0 at Wexford FC)
An opening day hat-trick for Wass with a superb, curling third.
2/6/17 - John Martin (6-1 at Athlone Town)
Three goals for the 18-year old – finished with a spot-kick – was to be Waterford’s last hat-trick for almost six years.
14/8/15 - Daniel Pender (4-3 at Athlone Town)
Another 18-year old at the same venue, Pender’s three goals gave Waterford United one of just five wins that season as the Blues finished seventh of the eight teams in the First Division.
21/9/12 - Seánie Maguire (4-2 v Longford Town)
Two stunning goals and a penalty for yet another 18-year old.
12/8/11 - Paul Murphy (5-1 v Athlone Town)
A hat-trick for the 20-year old from Wexford in front of an RSC attendance of 289.
17/9/10 - Willy John Kiely (6-1 at Mervue United)
Three of WJK’s eighteen league goals that season came at Fahy’s Field.
