The Monday Memory

Today’s Monday Memory is a recent one - from four years ago this week. The Fancy Dress Away Day in Malahide. The Blues, under Danny Searle, beat Malahide United 6-0 to reach the quarter-final of the FAI Cup. Having already stunned St Pat’s in Inchicore, the First Division Blues went on to knock Dundalk out in the next round before falling to Shelbourne at the RSC in the semi-final.

This was a Saturday six o’clock kickoff so the affluent North Dublin villagers were surprised to see a bunch of Peaky Blinders, jockeys and Simpsons characters descending on their local in the middle of the afternoon, but they were very welcoming. The party atmosphere was helped by the buzz of celebrating that week’s takeover of the club by the Fleetwood Group and excitement for the future.

It made for a great day out and the match itself was a completely stress-free cruise into the quarters. The Blues were home and hosed with three goals in the first thirteen minutes from Shane Griffin, Roland Idowu and Wassim Aouachria. Phoenix Patterson added a fourth on the half hour, but we had to wait into the 78th minute for left back Darragh Power to increase the lead. Wassim then scored his second and Waterford’s sixth with one of the last kicks of the game.
