The Monday Memory

The Monday Memory today felt like it needed to be a cup one. This photo links the very earliest days of the club through to the present day.

Celebrating with the FAI Cup in the Dalymount Park dressing room on the 20th of April, 1980. Seated are Walter Walsh and John ‘Fatty’ Phelan - two of our first cup winners in 1937 and both delighted to see the trophy return to Waterford for a second time.

Two of the biggest ever club legends are there too in Alfie Hale and Michael Walsh. You can also see Tim Galvin (Mayor of Waterford in 1971 and 1977) and in the background is the late Mark Meagan - the midfield maestro who sadly passed away two years ago.

This photo wasn’t taken long after Al Finucane had lifted the cup for Waterford and after Brian Gardner had headed Larry Murray’s free kick to the back of the St Pats’ net. A momentous day in the history of the club and every one of us would like to make a similar memory in 2026. The next step is to beat Sligo on Friday so get down to the RSC and play your part.
