The Monday Memory today comes ahead of Stinger’s sixth anniversary tomorrow. It’s from 1984 and shows new signing Timmy Dixon (left) being welcomed by trainer Paddy ‘Stinger’ Ryan and club captain Duncan Burns.
19-year-old midfielder Timmy had been released by Southampton that summer and was snapped up for Waterford United by Alfie Hale. A very popular player here, Timmy helped the Blues win the League Cup in March of ‘85 (beating Finn Harps 2-1 in the final at Kilcohan Park), but left at the end of the season with the club needing to cut costs.
